Thanks to the Hoefnagel Club, I got this challenging quadriptych (I had to look that up) of “Kyoto Four Scenes“, from Artifact Puzzles (Ecru line).
Puzzling: The individual puzzles hang together pretty well once assembled, but until all the pieces are in, there’s lots of slipping and sliding and holding together. The colors are distinguishable, with time — but easily enough confused that I had assembled a couple of the segments and then had to pull out some close-but-not-quite matching pieces from the assembled segments, because they actually belonged to different puzzles. This was possible, because except for a small number of whimsies, the pieces were quite uniform — a grid of 27 round-edged cubes, with standard frames and insert pieces. About three or four different types of interchangeable pieces. So, a lot of careful color matching. And, since my glasses are lost, I kept having to use my phone camera to zoom in, and try to assess the pieces, or compare with the image on the box (which was small).
The source image is “The Outskirts of Kyoto Throughout the Seasons” (1926) by Ochiai Rofu, 1896-1937 (Google, Wikimedia) — in the collection of the Adachi Museum of Art (Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture).
This is a 333 piece wooden jigsaw puzzle of “Kyoto Four Scenes” by Ochiai Rofu. This is from our Ecru line, which means it has a matte image for less glare when puzzling with lamps. The puzzle consists of four separate panels, each with a straight edge. The puzzle design by Chandler Millwood is based on Japanese joinery, with pieces that lock together to form a frame, and some individual connectorless pieces that form windows onto the beautiful scene. The puzzle has themed whimsies. Overall, the puzzle is a bit harder than average. Like all our puzzles, made with 1/4″ thick wood and the pieces are laser-cut. Packaged in our standard pine wood box. Made in USA. 4 panels, each 11.75″ by 4″
