Ray Troll creates fishy images for museums, books, and magazines in his studio on a rainy Ketchikan, Alaska hill. He is known for scientifically accurate, humorous artwork designed to make you smile, think, and engage with this beautiful planet we live on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ray moved to Alaska in 1983, which totally changed his art aesthetic. Being close to the wild world, with thick woods on one side and the deep ocean on the other, was transformative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His images of salmon, marine mammals, and fossilized creatures have become iconic in worldwide fishing, scientific, and environmental activism communities. He seeks his inspiration from marine science, paleontology, geology, ecology, and evolutionary biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His most famous design is “Spawn Till You Die,” which made a guest appearance on a T-Shirt in the movie Superbad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ray is a keen environmentalist and uses many designs to raise awareness of endangered species. In 2002, the ratfish Hydrolagus trolli<\/em> was named after him in recognition of his efforts to raise awareness of ratfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2007, he was awarded a gold medal for distinction in the natural history arts by the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, and in 2006 he also received the Alaska Governor’s Award for the Arts.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
