Wow, I stand corrected. I didn't think a gay person could write that poorly about this subject, but obviously I set the bar too high for Adam Nagourney.

PER "OUT" MAGAZINE'S "POWER 50" LIST:

***

7 The New York Times Gay Mafia: Richard Berke, Ben Brantley, Frank Bruni, Stuart Elliot, Adam Nagourney, Stefano Tonchi, Eric Wilson

Yes, there really is a queer cabal in the Eastern elite media, and it works on West 43rd Street in New York City. Style editor Tonchi, style reporter Wilson, assistant managing editor Berke, national correspondent Nagourney, and advertising columnist Elliot can set agendas in their areas of expertise. In the case of restaurant critic Bruni and theater critic Brantley, the fate of fledgling enterprises rests in their hands. This is one group you don’t want to run into in a dark alley.

DID YOU THINK MR. NAGOURNEY WAS A W.A.S.P., TOO?

McCain needs to feign enlightenment while appeasing the knuckle-draggers at the same time, and Nagourney's attempt to describe McCain's position is indeed very clumsy. The two phrases you quote are quite contrary, and I'm hard pressed to see how anyone, straight or gay, would neglect to see it.

being straight does not predispose one for stupidity or cluelessless.

No, but I don't believe any gay person, no matter how stupid, would have really elided the differences between “opposing any legal recognition of a same-sex relationship” and “support of civil unions”. That's the kind of stupid mistake that only a straight person could have made.

You're right, though -- straightness != stupidity. I could have been somewhat more specific in my targeting by saying "written by a stupid straight person". Sometimes when one is irritated one goes a little scattershot.

"... utter stupid cluelessness that led me to conclude the article must have been written by a straight person."

That's harsh - being straight does not predispose one for stupidity or cluelessless. Nagourney's prejudice is his own, and I concur with your other observations.
